The Champions League match between Real Madrid & Benfica was stopped after Vinicius Junior faced racist abuse following his goal.

What happened at Estádio da Luz?

The UEFA Champions League 2025 /26 clash between Real Madrid and Benfica was temporarily halted on Tuesday after serious incident involving Vinicius Junior.

The match played at Estádio da Luz was part of the first leg of Champions League play-off round for place in the last 16.

Vinicius gave Real Madrid the lead in the 50 minute with a powerful strike from outside the box.

The Brazilian winger then celebrated in front of the home supporters which led to verbal exchanges with several Benfica players.

Racist abuse and referee decision

According to Spanish media reports, sections of the Benfica crowd directed racist chants at Vinicius Junior after the goal and the celebration.

Following the incident, the referee decided to stop the match immediately applying UEFA’s anti-racism protocol.

Players from both teams gathered near the benches as officials assessed the situation.

At the time of the stoppage, Real Madrid were leading 1-0, with Vinicius’ goal separating the two side.

Growing concern over repeated incidents

The incident adds to a long list of similar cases involving Vinicius Junior in European football.

The Real Madrid winger has repeatedly spoken out against racism and has been at the center of several investigations in recent seasons.
