It feels like the end of an era at Anfield, as a team that defined a generation edges toward major change.
The impending departure of Mo Salah at the end of the season marks a turning point few supporters were ever ready to face. Since arriving in 2017, Salah has been the heartbeat of Liverpool’s attack, delivering goals, records, and unforgettable moments that powered the club back to the summit of world football.
His influence goes far beyond numbers. Salah became a symbol of excellence during one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history. Replacing that presence, both on and off the pitch, will be no easy task.
Uncertainty also surrounds Virgil van Dijk, with just one year remaining on his contract. Van Dijk transformed Liverpool’s defence when he arrived, bringing leadership, composure, and world-class quality that helped elevate the entire team.
But now he's approaching the age of 35 and long-term Liverpool will want to look ahead to the future.
The current campaign has been one of the most challenging spells of his time at the club. Long regarded as the foundation of Liverpool’s defensive strength, the Dutchman has found himself at the centre of a back line that has struggled for consistency and control.
Liverpool’s defensive issues this season have been clear, with lapses in concentration, poor organisation, and an uncharacteristic vulnerability in key moments.
While these problems are undoubtedly collective, reflecting issues across the team rather than one individual, Van Dijk’s own performances have come under increasing scrutiny.
Perhaps the most striking statistic is that he has already conceded four penalties this season, equalling the total he had given away in his entire Liverpool career prior to this campaign. For a player once defined by his composure and flawless decision-making, that shift is significant.
There have been moments where Van Dijk still shows his authority, particularly in the air and in one-on-one situations, but the consistency that once made him the world’s best centre-back has dipped. Whether it’s a slight loss of pace, sharpness, or confidence, there is a growing sense that he is no longer quite at the same level.
While Liverpool’s struggles are shared, Van Dijk’s decline has become harder to ignore.
And now Liverpool could consider selling their captain this summer as part of a sensational swap deal.
According to Aspor Galatasaray, who are bidding for their fourth consecutive Super Lig title, have already started planning for the upcoming summer transfer window, as they want to build a strong squad for next season's Champions League participation.
According to the Turkish side, Galatasaray would like to sign Liverpool's two stars, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, at the end of this season.
The club's chairman, Dursun Ozbek, is also considering ways to reduce transfer costs, so an interesting swap deal could be included, which could include offering Sallai Roland to Liverpool.
The Hungarian international is an extremely versatile player and it would make sense for Liverpool to add him to their ranks because he is a right-back.
But to sell Van Dijk, while already losing Salah would be an extremely bold move. The Liverpool captain still has at least one more year in him and could perform much better in a better structured team.
