Defending champions are eight points off the pace following defeat at the Etihad Stadium
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has fired a warning to Arsenal and Manchester City regarding the Premier League title race.
Van Dijk’s hopes of lifting English football’s biggest prize once again took a major hit on Sunday as the Reds were well beaten by Man City at the Etihad Stadium.
Goals from Erling Haaland, who had earlier missed a penalty, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku sealed a comfortable 3-0 win for City on the occasion of Pep Guardiola’s 1000th game in management.
The result means Man City took advantage of Arsenal dropping points against Sunderland to move to within four points of the league leaders heading into the international break.
As for Liverpool, the reigning champions are eight points off the pace after suffering their fourth consecutive loss in the league away from home.
Van Dijk, who had a goal controversially disallowed against City with the score at 1-0, insists his side have not given up hope of retaining the title.
“It’s about finding consistency and carrying on. Now we go to our countries, stay fit and be ready for a big run after,” he told reporters.
“We are not going to give up whatsoever. We are in November and we are ready for a long season and a big fight.
“The first half was difficult and they were much more comfortable on the ball and it was difficult for our guys to put pressure on them.

“I don’t think there was a lot of danger, but Doku had a good game and it was difficult for Conor [Bradley] in the one on one at times. I don’t think we were much in trouble but we could have done better.
“We had to dig deep in the second half. We got more momentum in possession but our pressing wasn’t good enough.”
Liverpool face Nottingham Forest at Anfield in their first game after the international break, while Man City travel to Newcastle and Arsenal face north London rivals Tottenham at home.
