Fans are being asked to pick their 2025 world XI, with the spotlight on goalkeepers and full-backs. According to L'Équipe, voting runs until Friday as the shortlist is revealed position by position.

In goal, experience dominates. Only Gianluigi Donnarumma and Diogo Costa, both 26, are not in their thirties, and Manuel Neuer will turn 40 in March, a reminder that the role seldom skews young.

Alisson impressed against PSG in the Champions League and lifted the Premier League with Liverpool, who have improved since his return from injury. Donnarumma moved to City in the summer, won the Yashin Trophy and was decisive in PSG’s Champions League victory. Diogo Costa won the Nations League in June and fronts a Porto side leading the league with just 4 goals conceded.

Also named are Thibaut Courtois, Mike Maignan, Emiliano Martinez, Neuer, Jan Oblak, David Raya and Yann Sommer, whose years feature milestone appearances, stingy defences and a Champions League final run. A club managing to place two goalkeepers on the list would be some feat, but not in 2025.

At right-back, standouts include Achraf Hakimi, sixth in the Ballon d’Or and a scorer in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, plus Trent Alexander-Arnold after a second title with Liverpool and a move to Real Madrid. Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Denzel Dumfries are among the other contenders.

On the left, Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, 19, already has 6 England caps and roughly 60 appearances for the club, and team-mate Riccardo Calafiori is also shortlisted. Nuno Mendes, 10th in the Ballon d’Or, Marc Cucurella, Andrew Robertson, Alejandro Grimaldo and Federico Dimarco headline a deep field.
