Ruben Amorim may have some regrets after England star lights up St James’ Park with brilliant brace against Newcastle in the Champions League

Marcus Rashford issued struggling Manchester United with a timely reminder of exactly what they are missing with a superb brace for Barcelona in the Champions League.

The on-loan forward was in stellar form during Thursday night’s blockbuster league phase clash with Newcastle, lighting up St James’ Park on a triumphant return to England as he stepped off Fabian Schar to head home Jules Kounde’s pinpoint cross beyond Nick Pope to break the deadlock just short of the hour mark on Tyneside.

It successfully quietened a previously raucous atmosphere as Rashford scored his maiden goal for Barcelona on his third start across all competitions and fifth appearance overall, also his first in the Champions League since netting for Manchester United against Italian side Atalanta all the way back in October 2021.

He had already taken a step forward with his first goal involvement for his new club at the weekend, assisting Raphinha in a 6-0 demolition of Valencia in LaLiga, just days after scoring England’s fifth from the penalty spot in a thumping win over Serbia in a crunch World Cup qualifier in Belgrade.

But the best was still to come from Rashford, who just nine minutes after his opening header against Newcastle stunned St James’ into silence again with an incredible, dipping right-footed strike from outside the box that beat Pope all ends up before going in off the underside of the crossbar.

His exploits cannot fail to have impressed England manager Thomas Tuchel, who was watching on from the stands on Thursday evening.

A penny too for the thoughts of Ruben Amorim, with Manchester United again struggling for a consistent source of goals during another woeful start to the season despite having spent significantly to upgrade their forward line over the summer and said goodbye to the likes of Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.

Rashford had long since been exiled from the first-team squad at Old Trafford, having not played for United at all since December 2024 and spent the second half of last season on loan with Premier League rivals Aston Villa.
