The Blues currently trail The Cityzens by six points and need the league leaders to slip up if they are to retain their title for another year.
When speaking to the media ahead of this afternoon’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Arsenal, Chelsea boss Bompastor said that her side need the right mindset and mentality to keep hunting down Manchester City.
“We are not enjoying chasing [Manchester] City, we would prefer to be top of the table like we were last season but that’s the situation,” Bompastor said. “We are okay with that, we know that every game now is important to win and get three points.
“The mindset and mentality is there in terms of what we have to achieve to have a chance of winning the title. We are taking it game-by-game and are looking to give it our all.”
Chelsea go to Manchester City next weekend but Bompastor says that the focus is on the here and now; performing week in, week out to keep the pressure on.
She said “In our position right now, we need to make sure we put pressure on [Manchester] City by winning our games and we’re hoping that they will drop points. They are in good form but we need to firstly focus on ourselves and give ourselves the best chance to win every single game, that’s the only thing we can control right now.
“The focus is on us, making sure we go into every game with the right mindset and desire to perform and get three points.”
Chelsea have a strong rivalry with this afternoon’s opponents Arsenal and Bompastor says that she holds a lot of respect for what The Gunners have achieved.
She said “It’s nice to have the competition between both clubs, it’s special for the women’s game. As much as it’s a battle on the pitch, I think we need to show respect. Arsenal are a top team, the club are doing great for the women’s game and we need to respect that. As a manager, I will always be respectful.
“Going into the game, we want to give them a hard time on the pitch. Sometimes as a manager, you can be a little bit emotional in the game but I never miss any respect for the opponent.”
