Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Sunderland, breaking their goalscoring drought, but they are now winless in five Premier League games.
Unai Emery was dejected after his side failed again to pick up a win in the Premier League this season. “We’re not playing like I want. We were not dominating the ball,” Emery responded when asked if the team had lost its identity.
“I am frustrated and disappointed with how we played. We were lazy defensively. The goal we conceded was because of laziness.”
Matty Cash opened the scoring in the 67th minute with a sensational strike from outside the box, although Villa saw their hard work undone not ten minutes later as Wilson Isidor evened up the proceedings in the 75th minute.
“We were not controlling the game. We were conceding a lot of chances,” Emery said. Despite the visitors’ numerical advantage following the red card on the stroke of half an hour, Emery’s side struggled to create chances, a continuation of a worrying trend that has emerged in the first five games this season.
On this issue, Emery said: “The same thing has happened sometimes over the last three years I’ve been here. I’m confident we will correct this.”
Aston Villa will host Fulham in the Premier League next Sunday, and Emery will be hoping his team can rally and pick up their first win of the season at Villa Park.
