Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga season is suddenly on the uptick, in large part due to the contributions of Danish midfielder Jens Stage. Werder struggled early in the season partially thanks to the fact that Stage had to pick up form after suffering an injury in training camp. The 29-year-old is now back picking up where he left off last season; scoring goals despite his deep midfield position.
After exploding to score ten goals for Werder last season, Stage has already netted four Bundesliga tallies in his eight league appearances. Stage has scored three in his last four starts, striking crucial late equalizers against Mainz and Wolfsburg in the last two league fixtures.
Stage’s latest goal – which ended up deepening Wolfsburg’s crisis – nevertheless left the twice-capped Danish international with mixed feelings. Plenty of Danes play for Wolfsburg. Germany’s green company team is also presently managed by a Danish chief personnel executive.
Stage had the opportunity to play against one of his personal idols on Friday night. Danish legend Christian Eriksen, along with the rest of his friends, are still genuinely struggling at the moment. These troubles were on the Dane’s mind in the mixed zone on Friday night.
“Wolfsburg is going through a difficult phase, which I’m sorry about because I have a lot of good friends there,” Stage said. “Jonas Wind is a great friend of mine, as are Andreas Skov Olsen and Joakim Maehle. Christian Eriksen is a role model for me as a Dane. It was special to play against him. I played with him once in the national team. This was the first time I was able to face him as an opponent.”
