West Brom have reportedly been charged with a PSR breach, with a maximum sanction appearing to be five points and any ruling potentially pivotal for Leicester City’s relegation fight.
West Brom maintain they have complied with the financial rules. Sky Sports report that the dispute centres on about £5m in interest payments to former owner Guochuan Lai, with new owners Bilkul believing the liability sits with them, not the club, and the EFL taking the opposite view.
If it is treated as a club payment, it would fall under PSR. If the case hinges on £5m, the club can only have exceeded the loss limit by that maximum, and the true figure could be lower.
EFL sentencing guidelines indicate a £5m breach equates to five points, £2m to £4m to four points, and under £2m to three. That is a starting point, with co-operation and good behaviour able to reduce any sanction.
Guidelines also state any deduction must be served in the season following the breach, which would mean a sanction this season despite only just over a fortnight remaining.
City are five points behind West Brom with four matches to play, the Baggies now just above the drop after Portsmouth’s midweek win. Under caretaker James Morrison they are unbeaten in seven and face Preston this weekend.
