Albion youngster Akeel Higgins is poised to seal a permanent move to Wigan Athletic, according to ExpressAndStar.com.

The attacker, who turns 21 this month, is out of contract this summer and is set to depart on a free transfer, with Albion inserting a future sell-on clause. He was offered fresh terms earlier in the close-season, but the club are content for him to seek a kickstart to his senior career.

A speedy wideman who joined at under-13s level, Higgins made one senior appearance for West Brom, coming on as a teenager in the FA Cup tie against Aldershot in January 2024. He was also named on the first-team bench under Carlos Corberan after impressing in the under-18 and under-21 sides.

He will reunite with Gary Caldwell, the manager who took him on loan to League One with Exeter City last season. Higgins registered 31 appearances in his first sustained spell of senior football, including nine starts and 27 outings in the third tier, and scored twice.

His first senior goal arrived in a south coast derby win over Plymouth. Other Albion under-21s whose deals expired at the end of last season include goalkeepers Ben Cisse and Brian Okonkwo, defender Jamal Mohammed and attacker Jaiden Francis-Caesar.
