The Hammers are preparing for their first Championship campaign since 2012 after coming 18th in the top-flight, missing out on safety by just two points.

Returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking is definitely something the East London outfit will target given they are likely to have dominant financial resources compared to the rest of the division and could raise significant money through a number of player sales this summer.

One player sale that has already developed is of Mateus Fernandes, with the midfielder moving back to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Hammers have reportedly pocketed a fixed fee of £85m, which will be so important to attacking the summer transfer window and building a squad capable of being towards the Championship summit next year.

The Portuguese midfielder had been one of West Ham’s standout performers in the Premier League last season, despite suffering relegation, with 35 starts from the 36 top-flight games he was available for proving how influential he was in the Hammers side.

Since his move to North London was confirmed, Fernandes has since penned an exit message to West Ham supporters, which has got them talking as to how they feel about his departure from the London Stadium.

Securing an immediate return to the Premier League following West Ham’s relegation, Portuguese international Mateus Fernandes only represented the famous claret and blue for one season, and wasn’t keen on stepping down a level to help return the Hammers to the big time at the first time of asking.

After his move to Tottenham was confirmed, Fernandes penned a detailed exit message to West Ham supporters via his Instagram page, admitting West Ham will always hold a special place in his heart, despite such a short stay.

Fernandes posted: “The day has come for us to move forward, each taking a different path.

“I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this journey and to have become a part of your story.

“I’ve always believed that football is about people, and I’ve been lucky enough to meet some truly incredible ones along the way. From the kitchen staff to everyone involved in supporting the players, thank you for your kindness, dedication, and for making me feel at home.

“To my friend Jamo, Rob, Doctor Chris, Mr. Nuno, his staff and all my teammates, thank you for everything. I’m grateful for the chance to have played alongside world-class players, but above all, for having found friends with whom I learned, grew, and enjoyed every single day.

“To the fans, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Even during the toughest moments, when the results weren’t what we all hoped for, your support never faded. Your loyalty and passion meant more than words can express.

“Football is full of challenges, victories, and disappointments. Although we didn’t achieve the goals we set ourselves this season, I’m incredibly proud to have represented this club and to have fought alongside such amazing people.

“This club will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ll carry with me every lesson, every memory, and every moment we shared.

“I wish the club and everyone connected with it nothing but success, and I’m certain that better days are ahead.

“MF.”

After just one season at the London Stadium and securing his move away from West Ham quite quickly, there’s understandably been quite a mixed reaction from Hammers supporters about his exit.

One Hammers supporter, Carpygeorge29, commented: “Forever a hero thanks for everything Matty” ⚒️❤️

Meanwhile, other West Ham supporters took to the comments section to vent their frustrations, with Osully2016 commenting two snake emojis, while gowdy_55 also sent a snake emoji.

_d.m12 was evidently delighted at the £85m fee West Ham received to use on their summer spending in the Championship, commenting: “Thanks for helping us pull Spurs' pants down AGAIN 😂.”

Jase9 echoed the hostile feelings some Hammers fans have towards Fernandes, posting: “Hopefully a third successful relegation next season! 🤞🏽.”

J1ake07 followed a similar route, also posting: “Spurs over United 😂😂😂, enjoy relegation again next season.”

Dandrums182 also predicted Fernandes to suffer while at Spurs, posting: “3rd relegation incoming. See ya 👋🏻.”

Finally, FlynnDixon10 accused Fernandes’ exit message of not being sincere, posting: “Written by CHATGPT”, a comment that has earned 500 likes.

Mateus Fernandes a mostly hated man for swift West Ham exit

Judging by the comments from his exit message on Instagram, it appears the majority of West Ham supporters are filled with anger and hate that Mateus Fernandes has jumped ship so quickly following the Hammers’ relegation down to the Championship.

It’s something the Portuguese international did at Southampton too to originally move to the London Stadium, and Hammers supporters are bound to be frustrated that he hasn’t stuck around to get the East London outfit back into the big time.

It will be even more head scratching that out of all the Premier League clubs he could move to, it was Spurs, with Fernandes potentially involved in another relegation battle next season after Tottenham recorded back-to-back 17th placed finishes over the last two terms.

Fernandes could have turned himself into a West Ham hero by staying and helping right the wrongs from last season’s awful relegation campaign, but he will instead be remembered as a player who wanted the exit door at the first chance he could get just because he wasn’t playing at the highest level, an attitude that will see him receive a hostile reception for whenever he steps back onto the London Stadium pitch as an opposition player.
