The summer signing has already lost his place to the stalwart
Graham Potter has no concerns over West Ham’s goalkeeping situation after dropping summer signing Mads Hermansen for Alphonse Areola.
Hermansen, an £20million arrival from Leicester City, has been Potter’s first-choice shot-stopper during the early weeks of the season.
However, a string of errors, particularly from crosses into the area, meant Potter opted to start Areola against Crystal Palace last time out.
Potter said it was a difficult decision to pick Areola ahead of Hermansen, but has no concerns over any last impact from the decision.
“I think it's always a difficult decision when you're making team selections, certainly at this level, because there are lots of, you can imagine, lots of top players with great attributes,” Potter said.
West Ham on Monday travel to Everton in need of a result to help them climb out of the relegation zone.
Everton lead the Premier League for aerial duels won this season, and that aerial prowess could see Areola again preferred to Hermansen. And has no issues with the pair competing for minutes.
He said: “I was happy with Alphonse when he came into the team. I think he had a good game, and I'm happy with the competition.”
West Ham are 19th in the Premier League after four losses from their opening five league games.
It’s been a dismal start to the new season, but Potter was keen to maintain that he had the full support of the players ahead of their trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
He said: “Yes, is the simple answer. I know that’s probably not what people want to hear because they want to create more negativity. But that’s the reality.
“There’s noise from the outside that you can’t control. What you can control is how you work here, the support you have with the players, the support you have with the staff. And I can’t speak highly enough of everybody here. Their support and effort has been amazing.”
