Chelsea take on Liverpool this afternoon in the weekend’s juiciest Premier League fixture.
Enzo Maresca was asked for his thoughts on the game as he prepared for his second season at Stamford Bridge. As he pointed out, Chelsea did well in both matches in the league against the Reds last year.
Moises Caicedo protects the ball against Liverpool.
“Yes, we played both games [last year], I think, against Liverpool very well,” the manager said.
“Unfortunately, we lost away and we won at home. But every game is different, especially from one season to the other one is different. We’re going to try to prepare the game in the best way we can for tomorrow. Try to win the game. Even if in the last one or two games they dropped points, they showed the reason why they won last year the Premier League. And they’re going to be there until the end.”
The game at home was a bit of an odd one as it came just after the Reds had won the league. They changed up their team and all looked a little tired and hungover. We did win it 3-1, but if it had been a week earlier we’re not sure it would have been so straightforward.
One thing that was pointed out a lot last year was our defensive line. In our impressive first game against the Reds it held up well but let us down at a crucial moment.
“It’s just to try to continue to evolve. As you said, I think our defensive line was very good last year. I think in terms of goals conceded after [Liverpool,] Arsenal and Man City, it was Chelsea that were so sure that we did something important. But it’s not enough. You have always to try to evolve, to try to add things, how we can do better. And now we are trying to do exactly the same.
