What to expect from Chelsea in the January window

What started as a good season for Chelsea has quickly turned disappointing, and with two wins in their last eight games, something needs to change.

The club have spent nearly £1.5 billion on transfers since Toddy Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the club three and a half years ago, but the squad is far from being a polished unit.

While Arsenal have quality depth in every position and the perfect blend of youth and experience, Chelsea have only youth and some positions where the quality is not nearly good enough.

Centre-back is an area where this is perfectly highlighted, and a position that Enzo Maresca may look to strengthen in January.

Chelsea have Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong, but with Levi Colwill out with a long-term injury, the quality of the other options is seriously in question.

Adarabioyo, Chalobah and Badiashile are all capable of mistakes, while Maresca has – for whatever reason – not been keen to use Acheampong much this season.

Fofana has the potential to be a top-class centre-half, but his constant injuries over the last three years mean he is having to be constantly rotated and is not a reliable option.

It is not thought that the Blues will look to make a defensive addition next month, but rather that they will wait until the summer.

Chelsea are not expected to make any major moves this January, but did enquire about the conditions of a deal for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo. It seems they will be going no further than that in this particular case, but it shows that if there is a market opportunity, they could look to strike.

It is more likely that there will be some outgoings in January. Axel Disasi and Raheem Sterling have both been frozen out of the first-team squad and are training individually.

Sterling has not played any competitive football since May, and it will be difficult to find a club that will pay close to his weekly wage of £325,000.

Disasi has attracted attention from France, with Lyon thought to be interested in a move, according to L’Equipe.

Given Maresca has afforded Acheampong only four Premier League starts this season and that doesn’t look like changing, Chelsea could look to loan out the 19-year-old.

They could also look at offloading midfielder Dario Essugo on loan.

It is not expected to be a busy or exciting window, with Chelsea’s hierarchy more keen on doing business in summer windows than in January.

But whatever happens off the field, results and performances on the pitch are what really have to improve over the next month.
