At almost 40 years of age, Manuel Neuer is still the backbone of FC Bayern. But how much longer will the captain remain in Munich’s goal? An update now provides new clues
The German record champions are planning for the coming years – and the future of Manuel Neuer is also coming into focus. The keeper is currently putting in outstanding performances, but his contract is only valid until 2026. According to statements made by sporting director Christoph Freund to Sky, there is no rush to extend his contract early
„We are under no pressure, and neither is Manu. Manu himself has said that it is important for him to feel healthy and fit. That is the case, and he is in outstanding form. He is playing an exceptional season. It is important that he feels really fit. We will see what time brings,“ Freund explained. Concrete talks about a contract extension are planned for the end of December

President Herbert Hainer had already commented on the goalkeeper’s future two weeks ago, telling the Abendzeitung München newspaper: „We have agreed with him that there is no pressure. If he feels physically fit, he will decide for himself in the spring how he wants to continue. And then we will sit down.“
Neuer’s retirement does not currently appear to be an issue. On the contrary: despite his approaching 40th birthday, the veteran seems as motivated as ever. In an earlier interview with BILD, Neuer explained: „It’s a question of health, fitness and motivation. But it’s also about what happens to the club next season.“
However, the club is also preparing for all possible scenarios. Should Neuer decide against continuing his career next year, there are several alternatives available in the form of Jonas Urbig and the currently loaned-out Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nübel.
