Grêmio have in recent days intensified negotiations with Peñarol over striker Matías Arezo. With the Uruguayan side struggling to meet the fee for a permanent transfer, one option under discussion is sending defender Nahuel Herrera the other way.

According to Gremistas.net, Grêmio would like the 21-year-old centre-back from Peñarol’s first team, regarded as the club’s most valuable asset at present.

An academy product, Herrera has become a pillar of the current side. Right-footed, he has mostly operated on the left of defence. The 1.87m defender has drawn interest from Europe, including clubs in Portugal and Spain.

Peñarol are speculated to seek about €8 million, roughly R$ 51.6 million, for any sale. Herrera is under contract until December 2027.

This season he has played 40 matches and scored two goals, ranking as the ninth most-used player in the squad. In the last Uruguayan league campaign he averaged 11.4 ball recoveries per game.
