beIN Sports has opted to show the World Cup in Full HD in France, while M6 is carrying 54 of the 104 matches in 4K SDR, a decision that has puzzled subscribers.
beIN Sports said the late award of broadcast rights left too little time to complete the technical work required for a 4K set-up, citing a mid-December deadline for connection to the International Broadcast Center. It therefore prioritised a reliable Full HD service and indicated it would consider future 4K events when timelines and infrastructure allow.
The move contrasts with beIN’s output elsewhere. In parts of the Middle East and North America, the group is airing the tournament in 4K and promoted a 4K HDR channel on 9 June ahead of kick-off.
Frustration has swirled on social media, with viewers noting a clear step up when switching to M6’s 4K coverage and some users claiming beIN still receives the UHD feed in France.
In France, beIN’s subscription offers 10 channels across all major providers, none in 4K, mirroring its Euro 2024 approach. By contrast, M6, and previously TF1, had already made the necessary investments for 4K distribution.
