Sonia Bompastor said she wasn’t happy with Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village – even though her side remain top of the league and unbeaten this season.
Her personal record with Chelsea now stretches to 30 matches unbeaten in the league since taking over in the summer of 2024.
But she was not thinking about those statistics after the final whistle.
“I’m not happy tonight even if I’m smiling – that’s because we couldn’t win the game,” Bompastor said to the club’s official website after the game.
“I don’t care about my personal record, I don’t care about our unbeaten run. The only thing I care about is making sure we get the good results this season to grab the title if possible. That means making sure we have good performances to have even more chances to win the league.”
Wieke Kaptein opened the scoring for the visitors in the ninth minute, but Anna Sandberg equalised with a cracking strike after 20 minutes.
And despite Chelsea using all of their substitutes – including Sam Kerr – they couldn’t find a winner.
“I said to my players before the game, when you play against teams like Manchester United, sometimes you get a good result with a whole team performance, having finishers who come in and make an impact.
“I made all of my five substitutions tonight, and I think the players who came in brought good energy and contributed to the game.”
And Bompastor thought it was “a fun game to watch” for the neutral.
“This is a good advertisement for the women’s game, so I’m pleased for that reason. If we want to grow the game as managers and as teams, we want to make the game fun for people to come and watch.
“I’m a little bit frustrated about the result because we play to win every game. We played better in the second half, especially without the ball, and we tried until the end of the game.
“I’m proud of my players for the fact that they tried until the end to score that second goal. As much as we have the desire to win every game, I think maybe it wasn’t a bad result to come here, playing in Manchester, one of the toughest places to play – that’s even if three points would have been a lot better.”
