With transfer season still far away, Matt Law’s appearance on the London is Blue podcast this week had a different focus.

He spoke to length to Nick Verlaney about injuries, in particular Cole Palmer who is currently out.

“Cole Palmer, even in celebration did not look super comfortable,” they noted, referencing the moment Jorrel Hato jumped on his back after the win over Liverpool on Saturday and was quickly shrugged off by the midfielder.

Law on Tuchel’s Palmer quotes

Thomas Tuchel talks about Trevoh Chalobah.

As Law explained, we actually got more information from England manager Thomas Tuchel about the problem than we had from Chelsea:

“Tuchel called it a chronic groin injury. He said there was never any chance England could pick him. Somebody said ‘does it annoy you he misses England games and plays the next Chelsea game?’, and he said ‘I’ll be very, very surprised if Cole plays the next Chelsea game’,” Law said.

“So he thinks it’s a chronic injury and has ruled him out of the next game. Chelsea are saying it’s an ongoing issue that they’re having to manage. Some people at Chelsea will tell you that he can play, but they don’t want to risk anything terrible happening. But when you look at his reaction when Hato jumped… it looks and sounds worrying to me.”

“Tuchel’s language around it was particularly worrying I thought… this is something he’s been managing now for a little while, Cole. So they keep saying ‘no surgery, no surgery’ but it’s a worry, a definite worry.”

Chelsea face extended period without talisman

All we know is that there’s no way Palmer plays against Nottingham Forest, and given there are some easier looking games coming up, we hope we can wrap him in cotton wool for a month or so.
