Why Wolves are visiting Maidenhead United in pre-season | OneFootball

Wolves’ trip to Maidenhead United on Wednesday night marks Cesar Peixoto’s first match in English football and a landmark friendly for the non-league hosts.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the fixture was agreed during talks two years ago around Max Kilman’s £40million move from Molineux to West Ham.

The National League South club previously inserted a sell-on when Kilman left for Wolves in 2018 for £40,000. They were due 20 per cent of the profit but chose to waive half to help the transfer proceed, with Wolves committing to a friendly at York Road.

Maidenhead’s chief executive, Jon Adams, said Wolves got in touch at the end of last season to set a date and have been easy to work with. He described widespread excitement in the town about hosting Premier League opposition.

The money received from Kilman’s move, believed to be about £4m, is still regarded as the biggest sell-on fee for a non-league club. Adams says it has underpinned the club for years ahead, supporting wider plans during a period of transition.

Founded in 1870, Maidenhead were among 15 entrants in the first FA Cup. York Road, opened in 1871, is recognised as the oldest senior ground in continuous use by one club. Talks are ongoing over a new stadium to modernise and, one day, push towards the Football League.

Wednesday’s game should further boost finances, with a crowd of more than 2,000 expected, including around 1,000 Wolves fans. Adult tickets are £14.
