In their final international fixture before UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, England ran riot with Ella Toone netting a brace and Lucy Bronze, Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones and Mead also getting amongst the goals.
Mead’s goal deep in second half injury time capped-off a comprehensive victory for the Lionesses, however, she had gone down injured just moments earlier, raising concerns over a possible knee injury.
When speaking in the post-match press conference, England boss Wiegman admitted that it was a heart-in-mouth moment when Mead sustained her injury.
“It was a hit on the knee but she’s okay, she’s good and I think everyone came out fit,” Wiegman said.
“It was a hard knock and it looked horrible, so we were scared but she got up and she could even score after that too. She showed that it was okay.”
Mead’s teammate Lauren James made her first appearance off the back of a lengthy period on the sidelines and she provided an assist for Russo’s goal. Wiegman said that the forward will continue to work hard to be ready for the first game at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.
She said “Of course, we are still building her but she has worked so hard to be where she is right now; at Chelsea first and in the last two weeks, we’ve had training camps. She could do every single training session and did really well which is what we wanted to see.
“This is the first time that she has been able to get minutes and we will keep building her for next week going into France.”
Reflecting on the victory, Wiegman saw plenty of positives, although she still highlighted one or two areas to improve.
She said “I thought we played a good game. We expected to be in the final third a lot because we knew over the week that Jamaica had a couple of players unavailable.
“We expected to have the ball a lot and I think we grew a lot in the final third. We scored seven goals which I think is really good.
“We created a lot of chances and in some moments, I think we could have been even more patient and a little bit more composed with the final pass but at the same time, scoring seven times and having some other opportunities to score was really good.
“From the counter attack and the corner where they scored, we could do that a lot better but the goal was disallowed and we were lucky there. We did that better in the second half.
“We know that next week, we have to take our game to the next level but we wanted to play a good game, entertain the fans, get ready for next weekend, get everyone fit and that’s what we did.”
