Wolves are preparing for the Championship and have identified Dan Neil as a summer target. ExpressAndStar.com understands the 24-year-old, on loan at Ipswich from Sunderland, will become a free agent when his deal expires.

Sunderland have already confirmed he will depart at the end of his loan, putting him on Wolves’ radar for a midfield refresh.

After relegation this season, Wolves face a rebuild and need reinforcements in midfield. Brazilian duo Joao Gomes and Andre are expected to draw interest from elsewhere.

Viewed as a cost-effective option with promotion experience, Neil is considered a strong candidate on a free. Wolves also plan to assess Tommy Doyle in the summer, with the midfielder expected back after a loan at Birmingham.

An academy graduate at Sunderland, Neil captained last season’s promotion to the Premier League. He featured only three times in the top flight before moving to Ipswich on loan in January.

Neil made 201 appearances for Sunderland and has 15 for Ipswich so far. Ipswich are second in the Championship, holding the final automatic spot on goal difference ahead of Millwall, with a game in hand.

In a farewell message, Neil thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud to help take Sunderland back to the Premier League, and called captaining his boyhood club a dream. He added that, as a lifelong supporter, he is excited for what comes next.
