Donald Trump wants Iran at the 2026 World Cup

World Cup 2026: Donald Trump opens the door to Iran
For days now, international tensions have been running high around Iran. Hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the 2026 World Cup is being prepared in a tense geopolitical climate, especially after US strikes on Tehran. Despite this, Donald Trump is open to Iran participating in the tournament.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed he had received assurances about the Iranian national team's participation from Donald Trump during a meeting. "Tonight, I met with the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, to discuss the progress of preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and the growing excitement as we approach kick-off, now just 93 days away. We also discussed the current situation in Iran and the qualification of the Iranian national team for the FIFA World Cup 2026," he said.
He added: "During our discussions, President Trump reaffirmed that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to participate in the tournament in the United States". Finally, Gianni Infantino emphasized the role of football in a tense international context, despite his earlier remarks.
"Now more than ever, we need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together, and I sincerely thank the President of the United States for his support, which once again shows that football unites the world," he declared.
