Bayern Munich delivered a devastating Champions League performance on Tuesday night, thrashing Atalanta 6–1 in Bergamo and taking a huge step toward the quarter-finals. Despite missing star striker Harry Kane from the starting lineup, Vincent Kompany’s side produced a ruthless attacking display, overwhelming the Italian side with pace, precision and clinical finishing.

However, what should have been a perfect European night for the Bavarians was overshadowed by several worrying injury concerns that left a bittersweet feeling despite the emphatic victory.

Bayern ruthless in first half against Atalanta

Atalanta began the match with an aggressive approach, pressing high and trying to dictate the tempo. Bayern, however, responded with quick transitions, repeatedly finding space on the flanks. Luis Díaz and Michael Olise proved particularly dangerous, frequently breaking through down the wings with the help of intelligent overlapping runs from Josip Stanišić and Konrad Laimer.

For Stanišić and Jonathan Tah, the match carried extra motivation: Both defenders still remember Bayer Leverkusen’s bitter defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League final last season in 2024 - the only loss of Leverkusen’s historic campaign under Xabi Alonso - and they looked especially fired up from the start.

Despite Harry Kane being unavailable in the starting lineup following his recent injury, Bayern showed little sign of missing their star striker during the game. The Bavarians attacked with confidence and intensity, creating constant problems for Atalanta’s defense.

The breakthrough came in the 12th minute from a cleverly executed set piece: Bayern caught Atalanta off guard with a quick corner routine reminiscent of Liverpool’s famous Alexander-Arnold–Origi goal against Barcelona. Joshua Kimmich played the corner short and quickly to Serge Gnabry, who immediately delivered a low pass into the middle. Stanišić reacted first and calmly slotted the ball home to give Bayern a 1-0 lead.

Atalanta attempted to respond with attacking moves of their own, but Bayern remained ruthless whenever opportunities appeared. In the 22nd minute, Olise cut inside from the right flank and fired a precise low shot from the edge of the box into the far corner, doubling Bayern’s advantage.

The hosts were far from finished. Just three minutes later, Bayern struck again. Goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, in goal for the injured Manuel Neuer, launched a long ball forward toward Olise, who cleverly slipped Gnabry through on goal. The German, who showed a fantastic performance in the first half, kept his composure and guided the ball past Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi to make it 3-0 after just 25 minutes.

If there had been any concern about Kane’s absence beforehand, Bayern’s performance definitely erased it. Kompany’s side played with the confidence and efficiency of a team that had forgotten its top scorer was missing.

They nearly added a fourth in the 30th minute when Nicolas Jackson found himself in a promising position inside the box, but Carnesecchi produced a strong save to deny him. Even Dayot Upamecano tried his luck with a shot from distance, but it was saved, too. Gnabry rounded up the first half with a shot at the crossbar just before half-time.

Still, with a three-goal lead and complete control of the match, Bayern headed into the break firmly in command.

The mayhem continued

It took Bayern just six minutes after the restart to find the net again. A well-worked counterattack carved open the Atalanta defense, and Jackson was there to finish it off, calmly slotting the ball home to extend Bayern’s lead.

The Bavarians continued to pile pressure on the last remaining Italian side in the Champions League, and the fifth goal soon followed. Michael Olise produced a stunning strike in classic Arjen Robben fashion, cutting inside before unleashing a superb shot that left the goalkeeper with no chance.

Just three minutes later, Bayern struck again. Jamal Musiala met a low cross from Jackson and bundled the ball over the line with his shin, meaning Bayern had already matched their first-half goal tally within just 20 minutes of the second period.

However, the evening took an emotional turn shortly afterwards. Alphonso Davies, who had only recently returned from a muscle injury, was forced off after just 25 minutes on the pitch. The Canadian appeared to suffer a reaction and was unable to continue. Davies was visibly emotional as he left the field and was seen in tears on the sidelines.

Bayern still created several chances to increase their lead even further, but Davies’ unfortunate substitution took some of the momentum out of the game and led to a calmer final twenty minutes.

Even then, Bayern had a strategic objective in mind. With Joshua Kimmich, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano all at risk of suspension due to accumulated yellow cards, the trio appeared to deliberately pick up bookings to serve their suspensions in the return leg against Atalanta rather than potentially miss a quarter-final clash against either Real Madrid or Manchester City.

Olise was first, taking his time over a corner and receiving a yellow card that rules him out of next week’s match. Shortly afterwards, Kimmich followed suit by delaying a free-kick and also entering the referee’s book.

It was a calculated move by the Bavarians, ensuring several key starters will be available if they reach the quarter-finals.

However, the night ended on another worrying note for Bayern. Jamal Musiala was forced off in stoppage time with what initially appeared to be a minor injury. The midfielder left the pitch cautiously, and further updates on his condition are expected in the coming days.

In the dying moments of the match, Atalanta managed to grab a consolation goal. Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig collided with Atalanta striker Nikola Krstović while attempting to claim the ball, leaving the Bayern shot-stopper briefly down on the turf. Mario Pašalić reacted quickest to the loose ball and tapped it into the net.

Urbig required assistance as he made his way off the pitch shortly after the final whistle.

While Bayern ultimately celebrated a resounding 6–1 victory and a commanding position ahead of the second leg, the injuries to Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Urbig left a slight bitter aftertaste on what was otherwise a spectacular European night for the German champions.
