FC Bayern is deliberately fielding a smaller professional squad this season—once again giving several academy prospects the chance to earn a spot on the first team. One of the biggest standouts of the preseason so far is Maycon Cardozo. The 17-year-old Brazilian has apparently caught Vincent Kompany’s attention with his strong performances.

While much seemed to point toward a loan deal in recent weeks, plans at Säbener Straße have since changed, according to Sky. Club officials are now reportedly confident that the attacking player can be a regular part of the first-team squad as early as next season.

Cardozo made his debut with the first team last season and has also made a positive impression during the current preseason. Although his playing time has been limited so far, the Brazilian has impressed with his direct and bold style of play.

As Sky reports, Vincent Kompany and his coaching staff are impressed by the winger’s qualities. A loan is therefore no longer considered absolutely necessary for him to take the next step in his development.

Rather, the Munich club apparently sees an opportunity to gradually integrate Cardozo into the first-team squad and give him playing time on a regular basis as the season progresses.

Interestingly, according to the pay-TV network, several clubs from Germany and abroad have inquired about Cardozo’s situation.

Will Cardozo become Diaz’s backup?

Arijon Ibrahimovic is actually slated to be the primary backup for new signing Luis Díaz. Nevertheless, club officials apparently believe Cardozo has what it takes to join the competition for the role and pull off a surprise.

Lennart Karl serves as a role model in this regard. The attacking player seized his opportunity during preseason last season, caught Kompany’s eye, and even made the leap to the German national team shortly thereafter.

Cardozo is now following a similar path. According to Sky, the 17-year-old first wants to do everything he can to establish himself permanently with the first team. Only if that prospect doesn’t materialize will a loan move be considered again.

With his clear commitment to a smaller roster, sporting director Max Eberl recently announced his intention to give young players more opportunities. Cardozo could be one of the next Campus players to benefit from this strategy and establish himself long-term in the professional ranks.
