Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has informed the North London club that he wants to leave this summer after struggling for playing time under Roberto De Zerbi.
Suitors are now circling for the Spurs star, hoping to prise him away. Per journalist Daniele Longo, AC Milan have discussed Bergvall, as they believe he is a perfect fit.
Tottenham have spent most of the summer transfer window chasing midfielders like Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Spurs also want to do a deal to sign Joao Palhinha permanently following a successful loan spell. That has made Bergvall surplus to requirements.
The report also mentions that the seven-time Champions League winners believe an offer of around €30 million will be enough to at least open talks to sign him.
Tottenham paid €8.5m to sign him two years ago, and he was the club’s supporters’ Player of the Season following their Europa League-winning campaign.
If Bergvall is determined to leave, Tottenham should not simply cash in and sever ties.
Instead, they must negotiate a deal that protects their long-term interests, with a buyback clause at the heart of any agreement.
Italian clubs have historically been more flexible in accepting such terms, making AC Milan an ideal destination if a transfer becomes inevitable.
While it is unfortunate that De Zerbi does not appear to share the same faith in his potential, that should not blind Spurs to what they possess.
Bergvall has already demonstrated maturity, technical quality and the intelligence to dictate games despite his age.
His ceiling is extraordinarily high, arguably even higher than Sandro Tonali’s was at the same stage of his career.
Allowing him to leave without a route back would be a gamble Tottenham could regret for years.
A buyback clause would ensure they retain control of one of Europe’s ‘outstanding‘ midfield talents.
