Former Hull forward and agent Stephen Hunt believes Joe Gelhardt can be effective in the Premier League if a permanent Hull City move follows his loan, with Leeds and Hull likely to discuss the forward’s future this summer.

Gelhardt has had two loans at the MKM Stadium, first for the second half of last season before returning in the summer. He scored 15 goals in 42 games as the Tigers won promotion via a Championship play-off final win over Middlesbrough.

His Premier League minutes at Leeds were limited, with six starts and 29 substitute appearances across two seasons. He did, however, deliver a late winner against Norwich City in March 2022 that contributed to survival.

“Joe Gelhardt, I think he's a very, very good player. I think he can play in the Premier League. He never really had that opportunity,” he told the 1904 Club podcast. “You look at Jarrod Bowen, who's a left-footed right-winger who's scored goals in the Premier League.”

Hull may try to sign him permanently but there is no purchase option in the loan, which was agreed under an EFL embargo that prevented any fee-commitment last summer. With that lifted, any price would need to be negotiated.

Leeds were seeking £3-4m a year ago and could now ask for more after that campaign. They paid £1m to sign the former Wigan Athletic prospect in 2020, and his Elland Road contract runs to next summer.
