CD Castellón and Espanyol have confirmed the transfer of Álex Calatrava, the biggest deal in Castellón’s history. The playmaker has signed until 2031.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the fee is five million euros, paid in instalments with interest. Castellón, chaired by Haralabos Voulgaris, also secure a right of first refusal on one or more Espanyol players and keep 15% of any future sale. The package therefore exceeds the release clause in force.
Castellón first spotted Calatrava in Primera RFEF in summer 2024. On arriving at SkyFi Castalia he swiftly rose from impact substitute to starter, then cornerstone of the attack. A renewal that autumn ran to 2028 with a release clause of five million euros, warding off an early exit.
His first Segunda season brought six goals and 11 assists. Interest from higher divisions followed in summer 2025, but Castellón stood firm on the clause and told the player they would renew if no bid matched it.
In August they agreed fresh terms to 2029, lifting the clause beyond 10 million euros. Calatrava’s commitment remained exemplary throughout.
Year two was better still, with 15 goals and eight assists as Castellón moved from survival fight to dreaming of promotion. Elimination in Almería, where he scored his final goal for the club, restored the clause to five million euros and put him back in the shop window.
Among several suitors, Espanyol pushed hardest, with coach Manolo González knowing the Barcelona-born player for many years. Calatrava turned 26 last month.
