Alonso hails Mudryk return as ’emotional’ moment for Chelsea | OneFootball

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has described Mykhailo Mudryk’s return to first-team action as an “emotional” moment, revealing the winger’s comeback against Juventus was driven by more than football considerations.

Mudryk made his first appearance in 20 months as a late substitute in Chelsea’s 1-0 pre-season defeat in Hong Kong, just days after the resolution of the anti-doping proceedings that had kept him out of action since December 2024.

The Ukraine international rejoined the squad earlier this week and, after two training sessions, Alonso decided he was ready for a brief return to match action.

“I’m really pleased for him,” Alonso said after the match.

“It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back.

“When I told him before the game he could play 10 or 15 minutes, he was thrilled for sure. It was after such a long period, so it was a great feeling for him and for everyone else.”

The Chelsea boss explained that the decision was intended to help Mudryk reintegrate with the squad following his lengthy absence.

“It was more than a football decision. It was a human decision and emotional decision to give him this boost, to feel the great support that he got and the great reception when he came on the pitch.”

Alonso also provided an update on Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill after both players missed the friendly against Juventus.

The Spaniard insisted neither player has suffered a serious injury, with Chelsea opting for a cautious approach during pre-season.

“They had some discomfort; Cole with a contact injury and Levi as well,” Alonso said.

“It’s not a big thing, but we want to be cautious because there’s no point in risking anything. So, we’ll go step by step, day by day.”

The pair will continue to be monitored as Chelsea step up their preparations for the new Premier League campaign.
