Ander Herrera briefly captained Boca Juniors in Sunday’s Superclásico win, underlining a buoyant spell that has delighted La Ribera.

Introduced in the 72nd minute for Leandro Paredes, who had converted a 45+6 penalty, the 36-year-old Spaniard took the armband as Boca closed out a 1-0 victory at the Monumental.

At full-time he promptly handed it back as the team savoured the moment on their rival’s pitch. "You must celebrate the victory with the armband, you deserve it, you earned it," Paredes said Herrera told him, adding that the gesture showed the Spaniard’s class, in a post-match interview with streamer Davoo Xeneize and journalist Gastón Edúl.

On 15 April, in the Copa Libertadores against Barcelona SC, he briefly filled the role for six minutes amid absences. Moments after coming on, he struck from outside the box at 90+4 to seal a 3-0 home win and claim his first Boca goal.

Since arriving in January 2025, Herrera’s start was hampered by injuries. Back involved in 2026 and popular with supporters, he has started only five of 13 matches yet relishes representing one of world football’s emblematic clubs.

Family trips by his father to Buenos Aires fostered a desire to feel La Bombonera and play there. He remains struck by the club’s passion. "Boca is a unique club. It exceeds all my expectations," he said on TNT Sports.
