Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has suffered another career setback, this time at his current club, AEK Athens.

Martial’s time at United

United signed Martial from AS Monaco in September 2015. He arrived at Old Trafford as one of the best youngsters in the world and got off to a fairytale start to life in England as he scored a superb solo goal on his debut against Liverpool.

Martial went on to make 317 appearances for United, scoring 90 goals in that period.

He helped United win two FA Cups, two Carabao Cups and the Europa League. His best individual campaign came in 2019/20, when he was the Red Devils’ top scorer with 23 goals – a feat that earned him the club’s Players’ Player of the Year award.

However, Martial’s time at United was disrupted by injuries, which hampered his progress and made him unable to nail down a consistent run of performances and appearances.

For many fans, his patchy form and lack of availability proved frustrating, as they believed a player of his quality could have contributed far more.

The Frenchman left United last summer and joined AEK Athens as a free agent. His last game for United was on 9 December 2023, against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Martial sinks to new low at AEK Athens

Martial made a bright start at AEK Athens, ending the 2024/25 season with seven Super League goals from 19 games.

However, it appears he has already fallen out of favour at the Greek outfit.

According to HLN [via GBeNeFN], “Martial’s fall from grace continues as AEK Athens have not registered the French forward for the Europa Conference League qualifying clash with Anderlecht on Thursday.”

AEK Athens are set to take on Anderlecht at Lotto Park.  Martial has been overlooked for former Real Madrid and AC Milan striker Luka Jovic.

Meanwhile, United will be looking to get their first Premier League win of the season on Sunday, when they travel to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham.
