Antonio Rudiger on Real Madrid season – ‘What do you want us to do, keep crying about it?’ | OneFootball

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has said that he and his teammates must be honest with themselves if they are to put a second season without a major trophy behind them. The German veteran is set to compete for a starting spot next season again in the heart of the Real Madrid defence, after finishing the year as an undisputed starter again.

Rudiger was one of the players thtat was missed in the first half of the season for Xabi Alonso, missing much of it through injury. Despite the €60m signing of Dean Huijsen, Rudiger ended up earning his starting spot back again during the second half of the year again, but it was a tough job, as the defence haomorrhaged goals down the stretch.

Rudiger: ‘We have to be honest with ourselves’

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Rudiger explained that the solution for the Real Madrid players was simple.

“These things can happen that you go two years without winning a trophy. Of course, there’s a lot of noise and everything. There’s a lot of things… I wouldn’t say more important… but this is football, it can happen. You just need to do the right measures and be honest with yourself, make the right conclusions and go for another year. Very simple.”

“What do you want us to do? At the end of the day we should cry still over the last seasons? No. Find the right conclusions and move forward, because what is lost now you cannot win back.”

Rudiger set to remain at Real Madrid for another year

One of the players that was out of contract this summer, Rudiger bid farewell to former captain Dani Carvajal and defensive partner David Alaba, but he will be staying at the Bernabeu next season. Although it is yet to be officially announced, Rudiger has agreed to sign a one-year deal with Los Blancos. With Alaba and Carvajal out the door, Rudiger will be the most senior defender at Jose Mourinho’s disposal.
