The Portugal international honoured his commitments before departing. The No 4 featured in a Europa League match, then offered an emotional farewell to supporters and team-mates at full-time.

Marco Silva said after the game that the defender had long since made up his mind. He added that soon after taking charge he understood the player wanted a new challenge, regardless of the destination.

Silva ends an 11-year association with the club, having broken into the first team in 2022/23. He made 183 competitive appearances and became a leading figure from the academy. Before leaving the dressing room for the last time, he addressed the squad and expressed confidence in Marco Silva and Benfica’s aims for the season.
