Liverpool’s preparations for their crucial Champions League clash against Galatasaray have been overshadowed by the unexpected absence of Federico Chiesa. The Italian forward, who has become a fan favourite since arriving at Anfield, was not included in the 21-man travelling squad for the tie in Istanbul. Arne Slot provided a calm but detailed explanation, aiming to reassure supporters that this setback is temporary.
Chiesa’s name had been added to Liverpool’s Champions League list following Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury. With that change in the squad, many expected Chiesa to be on the pitch in Turkey. His absence therefore came as a surprise, particularly as he was seen training at the AXA Training Centre on Monday morning ahead of the team’s flight.
The 27-year-old winger has enjoyed a positive start to the 2025-26 season under Slot. After a campaign last year hampered by fitness concerns, he has already appeared in six of Liverpool’s eight matches, scoring twice from the bench and registering two assists in his only start. His sharpness in limited minutes has prompted many supporters to call for a larger role in the team’s attacking setup.

Addressing the media on the eve of the match, Slot shed light on the decision to leave Chiesa behind on Merseyside. The Liverpool manager stated: “He got a little niggle, I think is the word you use in England, in the last game against Palace.
“He tried it today [Monday] but he couldn’t finish the (training) session, so we decided not to take him because in a few days it’s Chelsea.”
This statement reflects Slot’s pragmatic approach since arriving at Anfield. Having guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season, he has demonstrated a willingness to rotate and protect key players to sustain performance across competitions.
Liverpool’s medical team will keep a close eye on Chiesa’s recovery ahead of a demanding schedule that includes a pivotal league match against Chelsea. His 153 minutes of action so far this season underline the need for careful workload management, especially given his history of muscular setbacks.
Despite missing the trip to Istanbul, Chiesa’s recent performances suggest he could become a decisive figure as Liverpool look to progress in Europe and defend their domestic crown. His dynamic play and eye for goal have already boosted the squad’s depth in attack, something Slot will be eager to preserve for the long campaign ahead.
With Chiesa sidelined, Liverpool will travel with only 21 players, meaning they can name just 10 substitutes for the Galatasaray encounter. Hugo Ekitike is set to return after serving a suspension against Crystal Palace, which should offer an extra attacking option from the bench.
Slot’s decision to rest Chiesa may prove a smart long-term call as Liverpool continue to balance domestic ambitions with their European aspirations. For now, the emphasis will be on securing a positive result in Istanbul while ensuring Chiesa’s swift return to action for the high-profile clash against Chelsea.
