Arrascaeta’s calf injury in Uruguay training ahead of the World Cup has sparked concern, including from the country’s president, Yamandú Orsi. According to Coluna Do Fla, the Flamengo midfielder has dominated discussion in the days before the tournament.
Initial reports suggested he could be dropped from the squad for the tournament, which begins on 11 June.
Despite Orsi’s concern, he is not expected to be cut from the list. After meeting the head of state, AUF president Ignacio Alonso struck an optimistic tone over the playmaker’s recovery.
It is the second recent injury worry for Uruguay and Flamengo supporters. Arrascaeta fractured his clavicle in April during a Copa Libertadores match against Estudiantes (ARG).
Marcelo Bielsa’s side will play no friendlies before the World Cup. Uruguay open on 15 June at 19:00 Brasília time against Saudi Arabia.
They face Cabo Verde on 21 June at 19:00 Brasília time. The group stage concludes against Spain on 26 June at 21:00 Brasília time.
