Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle on a €90m fee, excluding bonuses, for Bruno Guimaraes, with final details still to settle, according to L'Équipe.

The 28-year-old Brazil midfielder has had a deal in place with the English champions for several weeks, running to 2031. Newcastle had been holding out for close to €100m.

After bids of €70m then €80m were turned down, Arsenal returned on Friday with a €90m base, with bonuses and agent commissions still being negotiated. If everything is wrapped up in the coming days, Guimaraes would join the Gunners, something he has been hoping for over the past month.

Guimaraes informed club officials and his manager that he wanted to move, with two years left on his deal, to play in the Champions League, a competition Newcastle have not qualified for. The Magpies have signed Aladji Bamba from Monaco to anticipate his exit and have since lost head coach Eddie Howe, who was close to the Brazilian.

Lyon are watching closely. When they sold Guimaraes to Newcastle for €50m including bonuses, they retained a 20% sell-on on any future profit, which should be more than €8m for the club.
