Arsenal forward Alessia Russo says the Gunners are heading into their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea with high levels of belief, as the North London side looks to maintain their European momentum under the lights at the Emirates Stadium.

The clash marks a historic European “London Derby,” and for Russo, who has been in scintillating form this season, it’s exactly the kind of stage she joined the club for.

Embracing the Champions League Pressure

Speaking ahead of the first-leg tie, in which captain Leah Williamson is ruled out through injury, Russo highlighted the unique atmosphere that comes with midweek European football.

With seven goals in eight Champions League appearances this term, the England international is thriving on the biggest stage.

“I came to Arsenal for these Champions League nights,” Russo said. “I think every player in our team would say that these games under the lights are the ones they look forward to the most. There’s a different energy to it, and I’m just really enjoying my football right now.”

That enjoyment is translating into results.

Arsenal have found a rhythm in recent weeks, showing a defensive grit and clinical edge that Russo believes has “bred confidence” throughout the entire squad.

Breaking Down the Chelsea Challenge

While the two sides are intimately familiar with each other from domestic WSL battles, Russo insists that a two-legged European tie presents a different tactical puzzle.

“We’ve spent a lot of time looking at where we can hurt Chelsea,” the striker explained. “They’re a top side used to competing at the highest level, but so are we. At this point in the season, you know your teammates inside out. You know what they’re going to give you and how to set them up.”

Despite the rivalry, Russo noted that friendships with Lionesses teammates in the Chelsea camp are temporarily parked. “Once you cross that line, it’s all about the badge. We’re prepared, we’re feeling good, and we’re ready for whatever they offer.”

Chasing European Glory at the Emirates

Having tasted success in the competition previously, the hunger within the Arsenal dressing room to return to a final remains the driving force.

With the first leg taking place at a packed Emirates Stadium, the home advantage is something Russo is eager to exploit.

“We love that feeling of winning trophies, and we want to experience it all over again,” she added. “Last season was amazing for us in Europe, and while the history of this club is special, our focus is entirely on the now. We want to show everyone what this Arsenal team is about.”

As the anticipation builds for Arsenal vs Chelsea, the message from the Gunners’ camp is clear: they aren’t just there to compete; they are there to win.
