Atletico Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt meet in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Diego Simeone’s side are searching for their first win of the league phase, while their German opponents are looking to build on their opening win over Galatasaray.
Atletico Madrid could hand starts to several players fresh from their emphatic 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the weekend’s derby. Julian Alvarez was the star performer with two goals, including a stunning free-kick that had Diego Simeone in tears on the sideline. The Argentine striker has found his form at the perfect time, with five goals in four days leading up to this crucial European encounter.
Diego Simeone faces some injury concerns ahead of the visit of Frankfurt. Jose Maria Gimenez remains sidelined with a muscle injury and is expected to be out until early October. Johnny Cardoso is nursing an ankle problem, while Thiago Almada continues to deal with a muscle issue. All three players are anticipated to return in the coming weeks but will not be ready for Tuesday’s clash.
Alexander Sorloth is also available. The Norwegian striker might partner Alvarez in attack, although Antoine Griezmann’s goal-scoring contribution in recent matches may give him an advantage in getting the nod for the starting XI.
Eintracht Frankfurt arrive in Madrid with confidence following their outstanding 5-1 victory over Galatasaray in their Champions League opener. Coach Dino Toppmoller praised his young squad’s performance, describing the atmosphere as feeling “like a final”. Jonathan Burkardt was exceptional with two goals and an assist, establishing himself as the key attacking threat.
Frankfurt will be without centre-back Rasmus Kristensen, who continues to nurse a muscle injury. The Danish defender suffered the problem during their recent Bundesliga match and is expected to remain sidelined until early October. Forward Jessic Ngankam is also unavailable with a broken leg injury.
Diego Simeone’s side have recovered excellently from their disappointing 3-2 defeat at Liverpool in their Champions League opener. The team showed character to come from behind against Anfield, only to concede a dramatic winner in the 92nd minute through Virgil van Dijk. However, they have since bounced back with impressive victories, culminating in Saturday’s stunning 5-2 triumph over Real Madrid that ended Los Blancos’ perfect start to the season.
The victory marked the first time in 75 years that Atletico scored five goals against their city rivals. Simeone’s tactical approach has evolved, with the team showing more fluidity between formations. Their home record in the Champions League remains strong, losing just one of their last 15 matches at the Metropolitano.
Frankfurt’s recent form has been a mixed bag in the Bundesliga, but their recent Champions League performance suggests they are peaking at the right time. The Eagles suffered disappointing defeats to Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen despite scoring freely. However, their 5-1 demolition of Galatasaray demonstrated their potential on the European stage.
Under Dino Toppmoller’s guidance, Frankfurt have shown they can compete with elite opposition when their attacking players are in form. The team has scored 17 goals in five Bundesliga matches, more than any side except Bayern Munich. Their challenge will be maintaining defensive solidity away from home against experienced Champions League opponents.
