Augsburg set to acquire Bundesliga record-breaker Cedric Zesiger on the cheap | OneFootball

FC Augsburg keeper Finn Dahmen isn’t the only one setting club records in Germany’s Fuggerstadt. Dahmen’s FCA teammate Cedric Zesiger has now started eight Bundesliga fixtures for his new loan club. Augsburg have not conceded a goal throughout his 675 minutes on the pitch. No Bundesliga defender has gone so long without allowing a goal for a new club.

FCA head-coach Jess Thorup’s back-three – consisting of Zesiger, captain Jeffery Gouweleeuw, and Chrislain Matsima – have been rock solid in recent weeks. Quality defensive options such as Keven Schlotterbeck and Noahkhai Banks cannot find their way into Thorup’s XI. Projected defensive starters Patric Pfeiffer and Maximilian Bauer were even loaned out as soon as Zesiger arrived.

It’s no secret that Augsburg had big plans for Zesiger and, as such, secured a purchase option in his loan deal. Zesiger – who once reached a peak estimated market value of €7.5m during his early promising days in Wolfsburg – counts as a steal of a deal given his recent play. The Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung reports that Zesiger can be purchased for a mere €4m.

In a recent interview with Kicker, Thorup praised his defensive set-up in general and commented on Zesiger’s important role. Zesiger’s new record – which sees him pass German footballing legends such as Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger – left Thorup pondering his embarrassment of riches at the back.

“That’s fabulous,” Thorup said of the record. “There’s also Schlotterbeck and Banks behind him, but if he keeps playing like this it’s very difficult for me. He’s just doing things magnificently at the moment.“
