Ralf Rangnick guides Austria back to the FIFA World Cup this summer, ending a 28-year absence from the tournament.

Das Team last appeared at France 1998, when they failed to escape the group stage. Austria’s eighth World Cup appearance comes with high ambition. The celebrated third-place finish at the 1954 finals remains their finest hour.

The former Manchester United interim manager had threatened to resign if Austria failed to qualify. His side instead topped UEFA Group H with 19 points from eight matches, two clear of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Rangnick announced his 26-man squad on 18 May, blending experienced leaders with naturalised talent. Captain David Alaba returns from the knee injury that ruled him out of Euro 2024. He travelled to Germany then as a non-playing skipper. The Real Madrid defender finally gets his first World Cup at 33. Veteran striker Marko Arnautović is Austria’s all-time top scorer with 47 goals in 132 caps.

The 37-year-old finally reaches the World Cup at the tail end of his career. Borussia Dortmund’s Marcel Sabitzer and Bayern Munich’s Konrad Laimer drive the midfield. The squad leans heavily on the German Bundesliga, with 14 players plying their trade in the top flight. RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner arrives in the form of his life, having scored 13 goals in his best Bundesliga campaign yet.

Two naturalised talents catch the eye in attack. Borussia Dortmund’s Carney Chukwuemeka was born in Vienna, having previously represented England at youth level. PSV’s Paul Wanner switched from Germany’s youth ranks to commit his future to Austria. Rangnick personally helped convince both to choose the country of their birth.

Group J pits Austria against debutants Jordan in their opener, then reigning champions Argentina in Dallas. The closing fixture against Riyad Mahrez’s Algeria in Kansas City could decide a knockout berth. Rangnick has stated openly that group-stage progression is the minimum target.
