César Azpilicueta will retire from professional football at the end of this season, with a final Sevilla appearance away at Celta Vigo on Saturday.
According to La Colina De Nervion, the 36-year-old European champion chose a demanding finish in Nervión, where leadership mattered as much as legs.
He joined from Atlético Madrid in summer 2025 on a free, signing a one-year deal with an option, brought in for immediate know-how rather than resale.
Azpilicueta has played 16 matches for Sevilla and provided one assist, but his value lay in organising the back line and steadying a dressing room in flux.
Raised at Osasuna then Marseille, he became a Chelsea stalwart for more than a decade, captaining the side to the Champions League, two Premier League titles, two Europa League titles, the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
After Atlético Madrid came Sevilla, taking him beyond 750 senior games and to 44 Spain caps, while his versatility covered both full-back roles and centre-back in a three.
He said he had never imagined the journey he would live, and that it is now time to begin a new stage after years shaped by travel and daily demands.
His departure leaves Sevilla with a sporting and symbolic void, and replacing authority forged across Spain, France and England will be harder than finding another utility defender.
He leaves without fanfare, still competing to the end, a champion who chose Sevilla as the place to close the curtain.
