A new report from journalist Javier Miguel has thrown fresh light on the uncertain situation of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, revealing that the long-time Barcelona goalkeeper is expected to return not as first choice, not even as second choice, but as the third-choice goalkeeper once he receives medical clearance.

It is an extraordinary development for one of the club’s captains and one of the most influential figures in the dressing room over the past decade.

Ter Stegen is set to be given the medical green light ahead of this weekend’s clash with Osasuna.

Naturally, with the January transfer window approaching, speculation surrounding his future has resurfaced. What once seemed unthinkable, Ter Stegen fighting for minutes at Barcelona, now feels very real.

Tricky situation for Ter Stegen

The situation has changed dramatically during his absence.

Joan Gariía has seized the number-one spot with authority, producing commanding performances and earning the total trust of Hansi Flick.

Garcia’s form has not only stabilised Barcelona defensively but also redefined the hierarchy in goal.

Behind him, Wojciech Szczesny has done exactly what the club hoped, offering reliability, calm distribution, and leadership.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Ter Stegen faces a dilemma. Julian Nagelsmann will not overlook a goalkeeper lacking consistent minutes, and that possibility could steer the German toward exploring a January exit.

Given his back surgery and lengthy absence, interested clubs may favour a loan arrangement instead of a permanent transfer, wanting to assess his fitness and rhythm before committing long-term.

For his part, Ter Stegen has maintained that his only focus is returning to the pitch and rediscovering his best form.

But the final word will belong to Hansi Flick, and the reality awaiting Ter Stegen upon his return is far from ideal, as he will be the third choice in a system that has moved on without him.
