Barcelona duo prove Victor Font wrong with standout Sevilla performance

FC Barcelona came up with an impressive 5-2 win over Sevilla in La Liga. Coincidentally, it produced an ironic twist, as two players previously questioned by Victor Font delivered standout performances in front of him.

As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Joao Cancelo and Dani Olmo were among Barcelona’s brightest performers against Sevilla, just days after Font had used both names during the campaign to criticise Deco’s transfer planning.

The duo responded on the pitch. Both players had been targeted, directly or indirectly, by Font during the election campaign. In Olmo’s case, the presidential candidate reportedly did not question his footballing quality, but suggested that the midfielder’s injury record made the deal less convincing.

Cancelo, meanwhile, had also been used as part of Font’s criticism of Deco. The candidate had questioned why Barcelona moved for a full-back in January when he believed the squad needed a central defender more urgently.

Against Sevilla, both players were unstoppable. Cancelo was decisive, forcing two penalties and scoring a superb goal of his own, meaning he had a direct hand in three of Barcelona’s five goals. Olmo also found the net with another fine strike and celebrated in style, capping off an excellent individual display.

This was football providing poetic justice. On a day when Victor Font was watching from the stands while awaiting the election result, two players he had cast doubt upon ended up stealing the show for Barcelona.
