Barcelona and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen have been fighting a complicated battle in recent weeks, one that both parties can see to be a win in their favour for various reasons.

It all began with the club signing Joan Garcia and Hansi Flick informing Ter Stegen that he would not be the first or second-choice goalkeeper for Barcelona next season.

The player, however, refused to succumb to the pressure and held on, insisting that he would stay at the club and fight for his place.

Soon, he announced he would be undergoing surgery for his back pain and that he would be out for just three months.

The official announcement on his social media, thus, foiled Barcelona’s plan of using his salary space to register Garcia, which would require him to be out for four months at least.

A key meeting

As relayed by SPORT in a recent report, a decisive week lies ahead of both Barcelona and the goalkeeper as they prepare to meet and clear their positions on the complicated matter.

Ter Stegen remains understandably angry with the club, but the sporting management wishes to avoid more confrontations and look for solutions, especially with an official note pending to be sent to La Liga soon.

According to the medical reports that the club have, both from their internal medical team and the hospital that operated on the player, Ter Stegen will be out for more than four months post-surgery.

Since he is the player in question, however, Ter Stegen must provide the final green light for Barcelona to send the report to La Liga and activate the option for them to use his salary space to register Joan Garcia.

The upcoming meeting, scheduled on Tuesday, will be held with that objective in mind. While the relations are still cold, the club see that they can coerce him into giving the ‘OK’ with certain guarantees that they can offer.

Deco and Co. propose to offer the player all the support if he plans to leave in January, once he has recovered from his setback.

Further, they promise that his contract will be respected and seen out should he opt to stay as well.

Most importantly, Ter Stegen is loved by his teammates, and his agreement to send the reports will improve his chances of staying the first-team captain – something that is a matter of great pride for him.
