Max Eberl and Vincent Kompany answered questions from the media in Munich shortly before the competitive match against Wolfsburg, with both also commenting on Dayot Upamecano.

Reports have been circulating for weeks about a possible contract extension for the Frenchman at FC Bayern. Most recently, it was reported that the club and player had already reached an agreement in principle – including a term until at least 2030, an annual salary of around 20 million euros and an exit clause of 65 million euros, which will only come into effect from the summer of 2027.

Max Eberl emphasized the sporting importance of the 27-year-old at the press conference, but avoided any concrete confirmation of the reported agreement: „It’s no secret that we are determined to extend his contract because he is so important to us in sporting terms.“

He added: „The only statement that counts for me is the one from Upa and his advisors. We talk a lot and hope that he will choose us because we value him very highly as a player.“

Kompany: „Most developed in the build-up play“

Vincent Kompany also spoke at length about the central defender: „I didn’t know Upa before; we’ve been working together for 18 months now. I thought his initial level was already very good. For me, he was always a leader and he’s becoming one.“

He particularly highlighted his development as a player: „He has developed the most in the last 18 months in his build-up play. Upa is very progressive in his play and always looks for the way forward. He is a player who can develop into one of the best defenders in the world. There are still a few steps to go, and we will take them together.“

He also avoided an official confirmation of the supposedly imminent extension. The final talks are reportedly taking place in the background.
