FC Bayern is firmly planning to part ways with João Palhinha. But of all teams, Tottenham Hotspur could now throw a wrench in the Munich club’s plans. The Spurs are apparently actively pursuing a much higher-profile alternative.
João Palhinha is one of the players on FC Bayern’s transfer list this summer. The Portuguese player was never able to establish himself at Bayern after his move to Munich and has recently played hardly any role in Vincent Kompany’s plans.
Consequently, the club’s management team led by Max Eberl is working to find a permanent solution for the 30-year-old.
Tottenham Hotspur was most recently considered the most promising candidate. The Premier League club has been exploring the possibility of signing the defensive midfielder for weeks. Coach Roberto De Zerbi, in particular, is said to be a strong advocate for the transfer.
Now, however, the situation threatens to take a new turn.
As transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports, the Spurs are currently focusing their attention on Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United.
The Italian international is one of the most sought-after midfielders in the Premier League and is said to be highly regarded within Tottenham.
According to The Telegraph, there has been no official contact between Newcastle and Tottenham so far, but the Magpies are expecting concrete offers for the 25-year-old.
Should the London club step up its pursuit of Tonali, this could have a direct impact on Palhinha’s future.
It had already been reported in recent weeks that Tottenham is not prepared to exercise the agreed-upon buyout clause of 30 million euros.
Instead, club officials wanted to negotiate a lower transfer fee.
Bayern Munich has recently shown itself to be quite open to discussions. According to reports, the Munich club is now willing to let Palhinha go for around 25 million euros.
For Bayern, the transfer fee isn’t the only priority.
Internally, parting ways with Palhinha is seen as a key part of the ongoing roster planning.
In addition to potential transfer revenue, the record champions would also remove a high-value salary from their payroll. The funds freed up could then be invested in new transfers.
Especially in light of the upcoming signings of Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, additional financial flexibility is of great importance to Bayern.
Even if Tottenham ultimately decides to sign Tonali, however, the Munich club would not be without alternatives.
Sporting Lisbon is also still considering a return for the Portuguese international. Palhinha’s former club has been monitoring the situation for quite some time.
However, there is one crucial difference.
Sporting can hardly compete financially with a Premier League club. While Tottenham could afford a transfer fee in the range of 25 million euros, Sporting is likely to have significantly fewer resources.
For FC Bayern, a move to England would therefore be the more financially attractive solution.
One thing is clear, though: Regardless of his destination, the record champions no longer have plans for Palhinha. Club officials are continuing to work on a prompt separation in order to move forward with squad planning for the new season.
