Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has taken a swipe at all those who criticized Bayern for carrying a small squad into the season. The Bundesliga boss fielded a question about rising German phenom Lennart Karl whilst speaking at a press event commemorating Bayern’s purchase of the Unterhaching Sport Park for the future use of the FCB women’s team.
Bayern carried a squad of just 25 active professionals into a three-competition-campaign with a limited summer break due to the club’s participation in last summer’s World Cup. While English superstar Harry Kane himself wondered aloud if Bayern would be able to hack it, there were plenty who correctly augured that Bayern’s young emerging talents would be able to step into the breach.
The rise of Karl now suddenly begs the question as to whether Karl or the returning Jamal Musiala will be starting in the No. 10 role. Serge Gnabry and even Kane have also filled in brilliantly in the anchoring attack role. As a result, Musiala’s forecasted return had been postponed until mid-January at the earliest. Dreesen couldn’t help but laugh when someone asked him about the impending competition for a starting slot.
“I find this talk pretty amazing,” Dreesen answered. “Because I remember well when we regularly talked about the small squad in late summer. I said at the time that even a small squad offers great opportunities for talented players. We’ve seen that now. Competition usually always helps to improve overall performance, and I’m sure the coach will find the right solutions.“
