Newcastle United back to Premier League action after a Champions League midweek.

Facing Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in a 2pm kick-off.

The Newcastle United players knowing how massive this will be to get a second consecutive Premier League win, after the victory over Wolves last weekend.

Chris Sutton talking to BBC Sport – 19 September 2025:

“This is tough because you could make an argument for every outcome, but I am going to back Bournemouth.

“I have been impressed by the Cherries so far, in defence and attack, and although Newcastle beat Wolves last time out, they have not really got going yet.

“Former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is yet to win at Vitality Stadium in three visits with Newcastle, and he is going to have to wait a little longer for his first success.

“Prediction: Bournemouth 2 Newcastle 1”

As the BBC Sport pundit points out, any outcome is possible this afternoon.

Bournemouth have had an excellent start to their Premier League season, winning at home to Wolves and Brighton, plus a 1-0 victory away at Spurs. They deserved at least a draw as well as Anfield, with it 2-2 going into the very late stages, only for Liverpool to fluke it with an 88th minute goal, then another in added time with Bournemouth stunned by that goal that had made it 3-2.

Andoni Iraola’s team have though lost at home to Brentford 2-0 in the Carabao Cup, which ironically has helped them to prepare for Newcastle United, as they didn’t have a third round cup match this past midweek whilst of course United had Barcelona only three days ago.

The Eddie Howe stat about not winning at Bournemouth with Newcastle isn’t really that much of a stand out negative, not as it is presented here anyway. The truth is that in three visits with Eddie Howe, Newcastle have got two 1-1 draws and lost 2-0 in November 2023 when the injury crisis was at its very worst (and Tonali suspension) and the Bournemouth away match was after a really punishing schedule where Eddie Howe had been forced to play the same players match after match.

Newcastle United have rarely put in convincing performances at Bournemouth in the Premier League era and yet have a record of two wins, four draws and just that one defeat two years ago.

Newcastle’s performances have been good or better in all but the Leeds match and have deserved more points with their overall displays. I think more than possible that the margins might go finally in our favour today and if the finishing improves, United can get at least a point.
