Rayo Vallecano confirmed on Thursday the appointment of Beñat San José as head coach. His arrival completes LaLiga’s 20 benches for the start of 2026/27, with the Almería v Málaga play-off still to finish.

Born in San Sebastián on 24 September 1979, San José began in Real Sociedad’s academy set-up, spending four seasons. He then moved to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad’s under-21s before taking the first team, winning the King’s Cup in 2013.

He led Al-Ettifaq in 2014-15. In 2015-16 he coached Chile’s Deportes Antofagasta, delivering the best league finish in the club’s history.

Bolivia’s Bolívar followed, and in 2017 he did the double, taking the Apertura and the Clausura. Back in Chile, he won the 2018 Primera División with Universidad Católica.

He later managed Al-Nasr in the United Arab Emirates, then returned to Europe with KAS Eupen in 2019. In 2020-21 he reached the Belgian Cup semi-finals and again set a best-ever league finish for the club.

His next stop was Mazatlán, before a 2022 return to Bolívar, where in 2023 he won the Bolivian league and reached the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. He then took charge of Atlas, and from February 2025 has overseen 60 matches with SD Eibar.
