Benfica's immediate plans have been placed on hold after Enrique Riquelme entered the race to lead Real Madrid.

According to Glorioso 1904, Florentino Pérez will face opposition after Riquelme, a 37-year-old businessman, formally registered his candidacy, a move that also complicates José Mourinho's situation, with the Benfica coach waiting on the election outcome.

Riquelme told reporters it was a significant day for Real Madrid, saying members would vote for the first time in 20 years, that his bid is for the club rather than against anyone, and that elections had not been held since 2006.

He added that he is working on a serious, ambitious sporting and social project that he believes will delight supporters, and argued that change is needed within the club.

The presidential vote is scheduled for 7 June, leaving Mourinho's potential move on pause for a few weeks.

Should Riquelme prevail, he has previously indicated he would prefer options other than the Special One.
